Updates regarding Enroot’s programming during COVID-19

Enroot remains as dedicated as ever to supporting immigrant students’ ability to succeed in the US educational system and to helping them build an unshakable sense of belonging.

Enroot’s programming includes mentoring, post-secondary planning, job readiness training, internship opportunities, leadership development seminars, college success coaching and tutoring, and social-emotional support.

2021-2022 Academic Year Hybrid Programming

Enroot firmly believes in the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines to prevent serious illness and to save lives. All Enroot staff members are required to be fully vaccinated with an additional booster shot and volunteers are required to be fully vaccinated to provide our community with as much protection as possible.

Enroot supports these efforts by ensuring that all Enroot students are provided with updated information regarding their schools vaccine policies, vaccination clinics and testing protocols. Enroot strongly encourages all those able to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to do so as a way to protect themselves from serious illness or death and to reduce the likelihood of infecting others.

The impact of COVID-19 continues to challenge immigrant families for many reasons, including increased need for social-emotional support and financial difficulties. Other barriers include the need for documentation to receive services, discrimination based on documentation status, inability to pay for services, complex paperwork services, and linguistic barriers. These factors have only compounded the challenges that immigrant students and families were grappling with prior to COVID-19. Enroot continues to refer students and their families to the resources they need during this crucial time.

While Enroot was prepared for in-person programming for the 2021-2022 academic year, we remained flexible to the evolving public-health landscape and decided that we will be delivering programming in a hybrid format as per guidance by local health officials and school districts. Currently, all in-person components of Enroot’s program are taking place at Somerville High School and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.

Supporting Students

Immigrant youth have been disproportionately impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis academically. Enroot’s curriculum for 2021-2022 focuses on increasing opportunities to engage in activities allow for English practice, increase a student’s leadership opportunities and reconnects them with friends and classmates .COVID-19 and its impact, along with distance learning and its stressors, have added to students’ social-emotional needs, calling for greater 1:1 social-emotional support systems for young individuals.
